An idea was put to the league of introducing a pool of unattached players or players from different clubs who don’t get to play often, maybe because of having a large squad of players. Teams could then call on players from this pool if they are having difficulty getting a team together so that fixtures could be fulfilled on-time, rather than deferred to the end of the season.

The league thought it worthwhile giving it a go and Geoff Adams from New North Road Baptist Church is administering the pool. Anyone wanting to join, Geoff’s contact details are: MobileNo: 07885 988527 Email: geoffreymadams@aol.com

An example of how it could work:
A team might get promoted, but a player may not be keen to play in that higher division. Or, the club might have a large squad meaning they would not play very often.  Rather than drop out of the sport, this is where the pool of players comes in; The player could join the pool, and is now able to sub for another club’s team when they’re short of a player, maybe because someone is poorly, injured or on holiday.  The individual gets to play, the fixtures get fulfilled, and hopefully we keep a bigger number of people playing table tennis.

We appreciate there could be arguments about bringing in markedly better players, or only having weaker players available in the pool, and to counteract this we would suggest looking at the players past handicaps in order to judge their suitability.  It would also be courteous to advise the opponents that a team is planning to use a sub if time permits.  The hope is that for many, our motivation for playing is to play a range of people, having more people playing, and enjoying a decent evening than focussing on the end result.  To avoid distorting results, the pool should not operate for Division 1 teams.  Those teams should be able to cover player shortages from lower division players in their own clubs in most cases.

We hope as a committee clubs will respond to the idea and use the pool of players instead of maybe cancelling matches when short of a player.

Hudderfield Juniors Under 16s Table Tennis Competition
On Sunday 8th June, Huddersfield's top Junior's competed against each other at the Table Tennis Centre.
They played in a series of groups before finally the top players went on to contest the finals.

Junior Boy's Finalists   Junior Boys Plate Finalists
Winner Ismail Latif, Runner Up Louis Bartley Winner Jack Blezzard, Runner Up Rushiraj Dash

A cast of familiar and unfamiliar names attended, including reigning champion Roman Jabczynski plus current Yorkshire Junior champion Ismail Latif. There were plenty of tense competitive matches in the initial groups and secondary group stages. This created a Main draw and Plate competition, in the main draw of the top 8 qualified players with young tyro Joel Morton unbeaten as he made the semi finals, Ismail Latif was unbeaten in 3 games also, with Louis Bartley and Roman Jabczynski completing the line up. Semi finals - Ismail defeated Roman in straight sets whilst Louis prevailed over Joel in a 5 sets thriller. In the final the pre tournament favourite Ismail lived up to the billing with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Louis. The Plate competition however provided newer players plenty of competitive games. These yielded a final of Rushi Dash and Jack Blezzard, first time entrant Jack was triumphant, showing good quality and the potential to be a star of the future. The tournament was a resounding success, seemingly enjoyed by all.
